The NSW Government is rushing through legislation to allow developers and resort owners to privatise and cash in on our national parks.

Under the proposed amendments to the Kosciuszko Plan of Management, 4,000 hectares of the iconic Kosciuszko National Park will be put into the hands of private resorts for carparks, helipads, gas-powered ‘thermal pools’ and 4WD tracks.

This attack by the NSW government is a fundamental threat to national parks throughout the country and an existential threat to this vulnerable alpine ecosystem, which makes up less than 0.15% of the continent (1).

Australia’s famed Snowy Mountains are already reeling from unprecedented bushfires, a plague of feral horses and destruction caused by the Snowy 2 hydro project (2). This fragile Alpine landscape needs protection now more than ever, not further exploitation.

We need your help now. Submissions on the proposed changes to the Kosciuszko National Park are due by August 23. We’ve made it easy for you to make a submission.

We believe this is a national issue and we also urge you to contact your local MP to bring Kosciuszko to the attention of the Federal parliament. Action this week could help save our national parks from private developers.

Snowy Monaro Community Advocates is a local group for those of us lucky enough to live in the Snowy Monaro Regional Shire. But this issue is for all Australians. We cannot allow this treasure to be privatised for profit and taken from the National estate. This is the last week to act. Please do.

I am deeply concerned about and object to the proposed changes to Kosciuszko National Park Plan of Management (Plan of Management) and Snowy Mountains Special Activation Precinct Masterplan (the Masterplan).

The opening up of our National Park to developers will put this precious and vulnerable ecosystem in great danger. I urge you to reject the changes to the Plan of Management so that the park, our national estate, is protected from private development.

A national park is not an urban development site. To open such a large portion of national park to clearing and development is a threat to this precious land and will put this vulnerable ecosystem in great danger. The Plan of Management should not be changed to expand commercial access and returns.

National parks exist for conservation purposes and low-impact recreation. The facilities that would need to be built to support thousands of extra beds in the park, including sewage treatment, have not been adequately assessed for environmental impacts. These facilities have only been justified for economic reasons, which is in direct opposition to the intended conservation purposes of the national park.

We need stronger protections for our national parks, especially Kosciuszko, which is part of the Australian Alpine ecosystems that make up less than 0.15% of our continent (1). The park is still recovering from unprecedented bushfires, ongoing destruction caused by feral animals and damage caused by the Snowy 2 project. Many flora and fauna species are already endangered.

Please protect Kosciuszko National Park. It was created to save a unique environment for generations of Australians to enjoy, not for the interests of profiteers.
